Gouache Painting: Boy with Toy Piano (and His Kitten)

Gouache on watercolor paper. As a mother, writer, and artist, I like painting scenes that tell a little story.

When I did Girl with Flowers, I had intended it to be a tandem work that paired with another painting I created but haven't written about, but because a friend saw the Girl and wanted it, I sold it to her as a standalone.

Now this same friend later asked for a similar work, but this time, a boy with his calico kitten. So, in the end, the Girl with Flowers (and Her Kitten) found a tandem painting anyway, which I think is somehow fitting, as if things came full circle in the end. I call this painting Boy with Toy Piano (and His Kitten).

Like the Girl, the Boy is made to reflect what makes homes bright and cheerful. It isn't about putting everything in the proper place all the time (of course that helps, but it's good for people not to be perfectionists, too), but in seeing the world through the eyes of a child. How do children see? They see with new impressions; they don't get bored with the ordinary and every day, because there is always something special about the moment. And they don't work themselves up about not getting "the best" of things... as you can see in the painting, the boy has a huge grin standing beside his calico cat and toy piano, which likely has only one octave! It's not what we have, but what we do that brings happiness.

I made this painting with gouache paint on watercolor paper.
