January 6, 2025, LAGUNA – As a way to prepare 4th Year Architecture Design students to work on their undergraduate thesis, Architect Richard Lasam gave a talk on healthcare architecture in the National University (NU), Laguna. The 2-hour lecture covered the basics of healthcare architecture, including building forms, activity zoning, circulation or pathways, and master planning.
The students, working in groups, were assigned different types of healthcare facilities by their professor, Arch. AC Roxas. Applying what they learned in the lecture, they could find solutions as they worked on their assigned projects, be it a maternity hospital, a pediatric hospital, or a cardio-specialist hospital. It would be their “mini” thesis, a work that would help them to hone their skills for the real thing in the future.
After the lecture, the Q&A followed; the students asked their guest lecturer interesting questions such as: Why are there no balconies in hospital rooms? When does a hospital need a helipad? Among stakeholders, whose decisions weigh more when there is a conflict of interest?
Overall, it was a fruitful afternoon of interesting discussions with students who want to know more about architecture for healthcare. Arch. Lasam encouraged the students to send him their questions if they needed more answers for their project.

Arch. Lasam wishes to thank Architects Joseph Alcoran and AC Roxas of NU Laguna for the opportunity to share his knowledge on healthcare architecture to students. For lectures and other inquiries, email rnlasam@spaceandcare.com.
